Reading Reflection No.3
I chose to read the biography on the interesting life of Steve Jobs. Growing up, all I had were iPhone with my first one being the iPhone 4. I have loved Apple as a company and its products because of their sleek designs and early innovations back in the day. I have followed Apple since elementary school and will continue until I decide to switch products.
1) You read about an entrepreneur:
-What surprised you the most?
What surprised me the most was Steve Jobs' fallout with Apple. I completely forgot that Steve Jobs was fired by Apple due to the power struggle with the company's board and other executives.
-What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
What I admired most about Steve Jobs was his innovative mind. He always pushed to create the next best thing. His drive to be the best is what got Apple to its position where it is today. Without Steve Jobs, Apple could have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
-What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
What I admired least about Steve Jobs is his demeanor. While I loved his passion, his relationship with people within the company was borderline toxic. Steve Jobs demands a lot from his employees in order to accomplish his goals and innovation process. Although, it came at a cost with him coming off too strong for some people to handle. While I understand why he didn't treat individuals in Apple well, I don't condemn his actions.
-Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?
Steve Jobs encountered adversity when he was fired from Apple. It was a wakeup call for him as he wasn't untouchable anymore. He ended up coming back to the company better than ever and saved Apple from bankruptcy.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
Steve Jobs' core competencies were his passion and drive. He wanted to succeed at whatever he did and wanted to be the best. His passion and drive for innovation is what created Apple's success.
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
What confused me the most was how out of the 40 interviews Walter Issacson conducted with Steve Jobs that his personal/family life was discussed more in-depth until the end of the book. I wanted to hear about how his work life affected his family life in great detail.
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
I would ask Steve Jobs:
Why would you go back to Apple after they forced you out like they did?
I would ask this to find out why he wanted to go back to a company that found him expendable.
Why didn't you start your own business after Apple forced you out?
I would ask this to find out why he didn't want to just compete with Apple to prove them wrong.
5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
I think Steve Jobs believe innovation and smart thinking could outweigh the importance of hard work because what's the point of hard work without purpose, and I would agree with his opinion

I did not read this specific book in this class, but when I was younger I read and did a project on Steve Jobs. I found him to be very interesting, and a lot different than what most people think about him. I think a lot of people do not know that Steve Jobs was driven out by his own company, and how not liked he was by the people he worked with. I think it was also interesting how often he failed, but people often do not know that because he was so successful, people only realize that. I really liked your review and would definitely ask him the same kind of questions that you did.
